TIME AND COST SAVINGS THANKS TO NUMBER PLATE RECOGNITION

The customer is a civil engineering and road construction company that is tasked with the construction, maintenance, repair and upkeep of approx. 1,000 km of roads.

THE CHALLANGE

There‘s no permanent gatekeeper. Arrivals, departures and parking of mainly heavy vehicles on the large company premises are coordinated “as it happens“. An employee gets notified of the opening of the gate by mobile phone. This person then interrupts the current work as quickly as possible.

The way to the gate takes at least 3 minutes. This time is later lost when the original tasks are fulfilled. Paid overtime is on the increase. During peak periods, this „parttime job“ takes up even more time. Drivers often had to wait up to 15 minutes.

Often long queues were formed, which occasionally lead to a backlog and hindrances in flowing traffic. Customers, drivers, road users and staff complained. Each vehicle takes at least 6 minutes to gatekeep.

With 30 vehicles spread over the course of the day, the time spent adds up to 180 minutes. For a five-day week, the „part-time job“ takes an additional 10 hours, and 40 hours in a month.

THE REQUIREMENT

The gatekeeper‘s job should take up as little time as possible through automation.

Of particular importance is the fact that the number plates of trucks, sweepers, flatbed trucks, garden vehicles, sprinkling vehicles or electric trolleys are mounted at different heights and positions.

THE GEUTEBRÜCK CUSTOMIZED SOLUTION

For this project, Geutebrück designed a tailor-made solution consisting of software components and the correspondingly configured hardware.

Automatic license plate recognition (ANPR) was used for automating entries and exits with an integrated whitelist for access authorizations. A special ANPR camera with integrated IR headlights for reliable recognition of vehicle number plates in all lighting conditions was mounted in such a way that number plates at different heights and positions on the vehicles are captured.

The commissioning support was provided by Geutebrück specialists, who also planned the maintenance of the system in the years to come.

The system was pre-tested by the customer, who had all vehicles approach the entrance at various angles and speeds.

The system reliably recognized all license plates.

THE BENEFITS

  • Automation: Vehicles are detected, the barrier opens automatically.
  • Visual evidence: The combination of time, license plate and video image ensures clarity during possible exits liability issues, damage or accidents.
  • Efficient work organisation: 40 overtime hours / month are eliminated (based on one person). More capacity for original activities.
  • More efficient processes: Queues and traffic chaos in front of the barrier are eliminated.
  • Satisfied customers: Orders are carried out quicker.
  • The investment has amortized after 12 months.
